Police response and community spirit praised following Nuneaton incident

October 23, 2017

Emergency services and the Nuneaton community have been praised after the successful resolution of an incident yesterday (Sunday 22 October) in which police received reports of a man with a firearm at a popular leisure park.

Specialist firearms officers and police negotiators, along with fire, ambulance and police air services, attended the location at the bowling alley in St David’s Way, Bermuda Park. A man was arrested after police entered the building and he currently remains in police custody.

Members of public at the bowling alley and neighbouring properties were evacuated to safety and nobody was seriously injured during the incident.

Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner Rob Tromans said: “Thankfully these types of events are rare here in Warwickshire but they are very serious. It’s a credit to Warwickshire Police that they maintain all the necessary training and skills to be able to respond effectively and very quickly when incidents occur. They made the decision to make a dynamic entry to the building to end the siege and everyone has been brought out safely.

“These sorts of situations could easily end in tragedy without the bravery and professionalism of the police officers involved and on behalf of Police and Crime Commissioner Philip Seccombe I pay a huge thank you to them all. Credit must also go to the great support which the police received from their colleagues in the fire and ambulance services throughout the incident, which provided a great example of how the emergency services work seamlessly together to ensure public safety.

“I’d also like to commend the local community in Nuneaton for the spirit in which they rallied round and looked after each other while the situation unfolded. It’s really heartwarming to see the comments on social media praising the police response and also to see how people stepped up to offer help in whatever way they could. It’s at times like these that Nuneaton really shows what a great town and community it is.”
